In the beginning of Spring, this normally desolate area comes to life with the blossoming of countless desert-adapted flower species.

Enjoy the contrast of scenery on our journey today. From vast open spaces to dramatic rock formations in the Cederberg. Our journey is long to our accommodation in Springbok.

After our gear has been packed into our two-man canoes, we head off into the wild. The Orange River forms an incredible sight – a green ribbon snaking its way through the desert and enormous mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We spend one evening camping beneath the skies and then make our way back to base camp to spend the following night in comfort.

Our journey today takes us along a beautiful scenic road into the true Namib, to the Greenfire Desert Camp, our destination for the next two nights. Our camp is located on our private Nature Reserve situated within the Namibrand Nature Reserve and is home to a variety of desert-adapted animals and plant life. The camp is incredibly constructed against a rock outcrop between the giant mountains and red dune-fields

The following morning our guide leads us on a walk to gain an understanding of the desert’s unique geology and ecology. It is important to relax at the camp during the day, to enjoy the plunge pool and a cold drink, but those who are energetic can explore the surrounding rock formations, watch birds, or sit on a rock alone, enraptured by the changing colors of the vast landscape as they watch the sun rise and set. Our afternoon exploration takes us on an open vehicle desert drive to search for gemsbok and bat-eared foxes, followed by a traditional sundowner drink. As the sun sets, we slowly drive back to the camp, hoping to see some of the nocturnal animals that are commonly found in the area, such as porcupines, aardvarks, and brown hyenas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expect robust custom-built overland trucks for long-haul travel, often with pop-up roofs and large windows for comfort and views. On game drives in tight terrain (e.g., Mana Pools), smaller 4×4 Land Cruisers or Land Rovers are used for better maneuverability

Yes, most trucks have charging points, and campsites usually offer power stations. Bringing a power bank is still a good idea for remote areas.

Many nationalities including South African passport holders do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days. However, because overlanding involves multi-region travel, and if you are planning to visit neighbouring countries such as Namibia or Zimbabwe, you may require a double-entry visa. Essentially, it is always best to check the latest visa requirements with the Botswana Embassy or consulate in your country.

It is a 20-day tour (19 nights). It can be done in either a North (Cape Town to Victoria Falls) or South direction (Victoria Falls to Cape Town). The expedition covers South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe The tour is offered in two main versions: a camping option or an accommodated version.

Malaria is low risk in most parts of Namibia, especially in the south and desert areas. In Etosha and the north, it’s recommended to take precautions, especially in summer.

Most of East Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda, is situated in a malaria-endemic zone. While the risk is real, it should not deter you from traveling; it simply requires proactive preparation. Where is the risk highest? Malaria is generally more prevalent in low-lying, humid areas and coastal regions (like Zanzibar and Mombasa) compared to high-altitude areas (like the Ngorongoro Crater rim or the Rwanda highlands). The risk also increases during the "long rains" (March–May). How to Prepare:

  • Prophylaxis: Visit a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before your trip. Medications like Malarone, Doxycycline, or Lariam are commonly prescribed for East Africa.
  • Bite Prevention: This is your first line of defense. Use a repellent with 30–50% DEET and wear long-sleeved clothing from dusk until dawn.
  • Accommodations: Most lodges and tented camps provide mosquito nets or "insect-proof" tents. If your room has a net, use it—even if you don't hear any buzzing!
  • Yellow Fever Note: If you are traveling between East African countries (e.g., from Kenya to Tanzania), you will often be required to show a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate at the border.
  • Expert Tip: Malaria symptoms can sometimes mimic a common flu and may only appear weeks after you return home. If you feel unwell after your trip, tell your doctor exactly where you traveled in East Africa.

24 Day Cape Town To Victoria Falls & Johannesburg Tour Reviews
Murray Eagles

I've just completed the 24 day Cape town to Jo'burg via Vic Falls camping tour with Drifters. It was a truly amazing experience, but it's also one that probably wouldn't have been possible for me without the amazing help of Celia Myburgh of African Overland Tours. Celia helped me at every turn. My plans were continually changing and my itinerary, as a result, was always changing. I was always changing my mind as well which must have made it quite frustrating for her, but she always responded with a fabulous, cheerful can-do response, and nothing was too much trouble for her, every query was answered promptly, and she always had options for me. If you need help travelling in Africa, I couldn't think of a better person to help with all the unknowns. I know if (when!) I go back I'll be contacting Celia for help.
The Drifters tour was fabulous. We saw so much, and it was a perfect introduction to Southern Africa. It was 24 days of unique experiences and every day I experienced or saw something that I hadn't before. It was great. This tour ticks so many boxes,- Namibia dunes, Swakopmund, Cape Cross seals, Spitzkoppe, Etosha, Okavango Delta, Vic Falls, Rhino Tracking (yes we got close to a few!) and more. This was complimented by our amazing guides, Bheki and Takalani. The knowledge these guys have is astounding. They seem to know so much about everything and everywhere we travelled and so really added to the enjoyment of the trip. They are both the most amazing cooks as well. Every night we had something different, and it was all delicious and fresh.
If you like camping and don't mind long days in the truck this is a terrific way to see heaps of Southern Africa and give you a taste of the many different experiences on offer here, and if you get Bheki or Takalani as guides, then you're in for a truly wonderful and fun time.

24 Day Cape Town To Victoria Falls & Johannesburg Tour Reviews
Annette Stiegert

Hi Huntley,
our Trip was really „a once in a Life experience“, which we enjoyed very much. Everything was well organized, we loved the Truck and we were very happy with our two guides. Gibson is a very good driver, cook and guide, very responsible and kind, and Lucky was very friendly and helpful, all the time. We laughed a lot.

Our Highlights: the opportunity to watch wild animals was amazing: Elephants, Lions, Leopard, Zebras, Giraffs… Gibson always explained a lot and shared his wide knowledge, which was very interesting.

Cape Town, Fish River Canyon, The Namib Desert, Spitzkoppe, Sossusvlei, Etosha, Caprivi, Okavango, Vicfalls, Chobe, Hwange. Elephant Sands and Rhino-Trekking (♥️)… all was great!

Thanks for your support and and good advice.

Greetings
Annette

24 Day Cape Town To Victoria Falls & Johannesburg Tour Reviews
Mo van Boxel

Hi Tammy
It's taken me a couple of weeks to catch up here in the UK and to get my head around the fact that my trip is over.
Thank you so much for all your support and advice while I was arranging my African adventure. It was a truly wonderful experience.
I enjoyed every aspect of the trip, from the Cape of Good Hope and onward to Johannesburg, but my heart remains in Namibia. I managed to stagger up 'Big Daddy' (it was fun coming down) but in the main I just loved the vast open emptiness of the Namib. Desert Fire Camp was such a great experience with its strange camping platforms, odd little toilet block and even odder cold plunge pool in the middle of nowhere, but my thoughts always go back to Spitzkoppe- my all time favourite. I could have stayed for a week just savouring the silence, the sunset and the stars. Not to say I didn't enjoy the multitude of animals we were privileged to see, especially the elephants at Elephant Sands- how incredible was that, having them just wandering through our camp site in the night. It was also interesting, and humbling, to visit the local village with Allen, near Maun.
Our guides, Chris and Thabang were wonderful. Their knowledge of the fauna and flora, geology, culture and politics was amazing. Two very bright guys! Five star cooks (I was always delighted by what they could rustle up in such a primitive kitchen), great and careful drivers and charming guides, as a group I don't think we could have asked for anything more. Very special young men.
As a trip, I will recommend Drifters to all my friends, though I'm not sure how many will actually love the idea of camping- with those hefty dome tents to put up and down every night- though I got quite fond of our particular one by the end!
One suggestion - not a criticism - is to have a night walk by a local guide after one or two of those very long drives. We were all stiff
from sitting in the beloved Green Truck for so many hours, and after putting up the tents and having dinner it might have been nice to have a walk and stretch our legs.
Otherwise- the perfect trip.
Thank you.
